AirSage CEO Cy Smith received the prestigious Innovation Award Tuesday night at the fourth annual Atlanta Telecom Professional of the Year Awards Gala. Twenty-eight nominees were recognized for exceptional contributions in leadership, growth, collaboration, innovation and community involvement.
Smith is the founder of AirSage, an Atlanta-based company whose technology represents a breakthrough in the delivery of real-time traffic information. AirSage aggregates and analyzes cell phone signaling data and converts it into real-time traffic information – at a fraction of the cost of traditional systems. Smith was recognized for bringing this innovative approach from concept to reality, creating a wealth of traffic information that can be used by millions of commuters to mitigate the impacts of congestion.
For the first time, traffic management operations can extend beyond the metro-area highways to deliver traffic travel times and roadway speeds on the entire road network, including arterials and secondary roads. AirSage data was recently added to Georgia Navigator, the Georgia Department of Transportation’s traffic information Web site, which helps Georgians save time and money.

Smith is an experienced CEO with more than 20 years experience in the telecommunications industry. Prior to the launch of AirSage in 2000, he was president and CEO of Advance Technology Corporation (ATC), a leader in geographical information systems (GIS), operations support and global positioning system (GPS) technologies for telecommunications, utilities and field services industries. Smith is a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering.
